Marvin Knows Best? pigskinrevolution.com More than 60,000 fans in Cincinnati knew what they wanted on Sunday. Trailing 14-3, Marvin Lewis and his Bengals were facing a 4th down and less than 2 feet on the Steelers 2 yard line with 2:16 remaining in the first half. With a rowdy crowd supporting a more aggressive action, Lewis took a time out and ultimately settled for the field goal. Sitting in the locker room after another disappointing loss, the Bengal’s leader had time to reflect upon his conservative choice. “Maybe we should have gone for it”, he pondered. A ZEUS analysis reveals that by shunning the wisdom of the crowd, Lewis cost his team over 5% GWC. While this wasn’t nearly the worst decision of the weekend (see “Giving it Away in Tampa Bay”), it definitely received the most press. This type of flawed thinking is certainly not unusual among NFL coaches, but we were a bit surprised to see Lewis take this course of action with the crowd on his side. Several years ago after providing a ZEUS tutorial to Marvin Lewis and his young coaching staff in Cincinnati, the coach turned to us and said something very revealing. “ZEUS may be correct that many of us coaches are too conservative on some 4th downs. But what you don’t understand is that if I go for it and fail, I have to answer to the owners, the press and especially the fans” Interestingly, this was one instance where the fans gave him their answer in advance. |
